Massively.com has the scoop that Linden Lab filed a trademark application for instant-messaging software, to be called “SLim.”
It’s not surprising Linden sees its instant-messaging platform as a vital asset. Last December, AOL, an early supporter of virtual worlds, withdrew from Second Life citing a desire to work exclusively with virtual worlds that employ the AIM instant-messaging client like vSide.
While Linden Lab files trademarks, Second Life’s user community is already finding new uses for SLim. Wagner James Au reports teenage programmer Katharine Berry, Second life linden inventor of the AjaxLife browser-based Second Life implementation, has created a SLim instant-messaging interface for the iPhone.
