DAoC Sees New UI Updates, European Cluster Tweaks

I’ve never been more than a newbie when it comes to Dark Age of Camelot. Perhaps I was somewhere else when the game reached it’s apex, or maybe I was just misled by it’s advertisements (or lack thereof). If I had known then how truly unique this beloved title really is, you would be reading the words of a DAOC Platinum. Alas, that is not the case, though I have half a mind to subscribe even now, given the attention the game receives to this very day. The developers’ dedication to this game is undeniable, as I’m certain that they are all active players themselves. It takes a certain type of dedication, though, to continue to bring substantial updates to a game that has been out of the limelight for several years now.

Stuart Zissu outlines on of such updates in his Producer’s Letter over at the Camelot Herald. This may seem like no big deal, but let him assure you, skill point allocation has proved tedious and frustrating in the past. Gone are the days of clicking chosen skills repeatedly to build your character spec. What has replaced them? Glorious slider bars! Yes, now you can work out your specialization lines all out of one window. Once you have moved your sliders to correspond with your chosen skill levels, you simply hit the “train” button and voila! This update should reduce those small irreversible mistakes in spec builds due to over-clicking, confusion, etc.

In addition to the excellent UI update, Bioware Mythic has been expressing a good amount of interest in European Albs, Hibs, and Mids as of late. Zissu mentions plans to implement a method to allow players on the Kattraeth and Glamorgan clusters to play together while still playing in their respective languages. Population density is always an issue in MMOs, and the guys at Mythic wish to unify those players and provide a more social experience in Camelot. Zissu also confesses that this is a long-term endeavor, and in the meantime, players may transfer from Kattraeth into Ywain if they feel the need to.

The billing department has been busy lately too, adapting their system to accept Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discover cards from European users. Support for other payment methods are on the way. If you are like me, and yearn for that one MMO that got away, take a quick look at Levi’s extensive break-down of DAOC Platinum. It’s a great read, and you’ll be able to wrap your head around some of the finer points of the game.
