As a fighter we use a method that is much better to attack at a very fast rate without running macro's or swapping weapons(DAOC Platinum). Just place a shortcut with a skill such as trip or cleave in toolbar slot 1. These work well as they have a longer cool down time, deactivate auto attack and spam attack button on your mouse, and spam the key assigned to your shortcut key where you placed your feat.

In this case trip or cleave. you can party as a level 8 with 10's and totally out damage them, check your kill count for proof as a level(DAOC Platinum) 10, you can double anyone else on the KC and finish the quest faster and gain kudos or solo quests with ease. Obviously you can not do TS on elite or anything but it makes you a far more efficiant killer. N.B. If auto attack reactivates simply deactivate, best to assign this icon to shortcut bar, also so you can deactivate quickly.
